The short answer: If Mission Control turns black or becomes noticeably slower after upgrading to macOS 27, save your work and create a current backup first. If you are running version 27.0, install 27.0.1, then test your Mac without an external monitor, dock, hub, or adapter. However, Apple has not confirmed that macOS 27.0.1 specifically fixes Mission Control. If the display also cuts out outside this feature or on the built-in screen, do not automatically assume the operating system is to blame.
What was actually reported on September 21, 2026
On September 21, 2026, TechRadar summarized user reports of Mission Control problems. These included stuttering animations, slow switching between desktops, and black screens when using multiple monitors or full-screen apps.
This is not an official list of bugs from Apple, nor does it prove that the issue will affect every Mac. The article also mentions users whose Mission Control continued to work normally after the upgrade.
According to the same article, some users also complained about a slower menu bar and Control Center. TechRadar attributes problems with Spotlight search to the system reindexing the drive after the new version is installed—a process that should resolve itself once indexing is complete. One user also described a temporary workaround for a black desktop after dragging it to another monitor: create a new desktop on the black screen, switch to it, and then delete it. This is a user-reported workaround, not an Apple procedure.
Apple announced the availability of macOS 27 on September 14, 2026. On its macOS 27 updates page, published on September 28, 2026, Apple lists version 27.0.1 as including general bug fixes. However, it does not specifically mention Mission Control, external monitors, or black screens.
| Claim | Status as of October 2, 2026 |
|---|---|
| macOS 27 was released on September 14 | Confirmed by Apple |
| Slower Mission Control animations were reported after the upgrade | Documented by TechRadar |
| The screen may go black when moving a desktop or switching an app | Described in user reports |
| macOS 27.0.1 includes bug fixes | Confirmed by Apple |
| Version 27.0.1 specifically fixes Mission Control | Not confirmed by Apple |
| The issue affects every chip from M1 to M4 | Unconfirmed |
Does this affect the MacBook Air M1, M2, M3, or M4?
The available sources do not provide enough information to compile a reliable list of affected models. The M1, M2, M3, or M4 designation alone does not indicate whether the issue will occur. There is likewise no evidence that any particular generation is immune to it.
The following questions are more useful when assessing the problem:
- did the problems begin immediately after installing macOS 27;
- do they occur only when opening Mission Control or moving a desktop;
- do they occur only with an external monitor, dock, or adapter;
- does the built-in display remain functional;
- does the display also cut out during startup or in ordinary applications.
If the Mac works without external accessories and the problem returns only after reconnecting them, also follow the procedure for when a MacBook does not detect an external monitor.
Should you update, wait, or look for a fault?
| Your situation | Sensible next step |
|---|---|
| You use an older version of macOS and rely on Mission Control every day | Postpone the major upgrade until you have a current backup and time to test your work setup |
| You use macOS 27.0 | After backing up, install the available version 27.0.1 |
| The problem disappeared after installing 27.0.1 | Test your usual monitor, dock, and adapter setup as well |
| Mission Control remains black or stutters | Test the Mac without external displays, then reconnect them one at a time |
| The display also cuts out outside Mission Control | Consider other software or hardware causes as well |
| The black screen appears during startup | Do not simply wait for another system update; diagnostics are advisable |
Postponing a major upgrade does not mean ignoring updates indefinitely. For a work Mac, however, it makes sense to secure a backup first and confirm that the monitors, docks, and adapters you use will not disrupt your normal workflow.
What to do immediately when Mission Control turns black
First, save any documents you are working on. Then change only one part of the setup at a time; otherwise, you will not know what affected the behavior.
- Check whether the Mac is running macOS 27.0 or 27.0.1.
- If you have 27.0, create a backup and install 27.0.1.
- Disconnect the external monitor, USB-C or Thunderbolt dock, hub, and display adapter.
- Test Mission Control using only the built-in display.
- Connect the monitor directly if possible and try another suitable cable.
- Note whether the screen turns black when you open Mission Control, move a desktop between monitors, or switch an app to full-screen mode.
- After saving your work, perform one controlled restart and test the result again.
Repeatedly forcing the Mac to shut down by holding the power button is not a solution. If the Mac is responding, give it time and use the standard shut-down or restart option.
How to distinguish a macOS problem from a Mac fault
A connection to the operating system or attached accessories is more likely if the problem began only after the upgrade, is limited to Mission Control, and disappears when the monitor or dock is disconnected. Even then, further testing is required to identify the exact technical cause.
Do not assume it is merely a Mission Control bug if:
- the screen turns black before login;
- the built-in display also cuts out with no devices connected;
- lines, spots, flickering, or other artifacts appear on the screen;
- the Mac also becomes unresponsive during ordinary work outside Mission Control;
- the problems began before the upgrade.

When professional diagnostics make sense
Diagnostics are advisable if the problem persists on macOS 27.0.1, recurs without external devices, or you need to distinguish an operating system bug from a fault in the display, display signal path, or logic board.
For testing, it is especially useful to bring the accessories used when the problem occurs: the USB-C or Thunderbolt dock, display adapter, and cable. Also note the exact MacBook model, macOS version, and the point at which the screen turns black. The M1, M2, M3, or M4 designation alone is not enough to determine the cause.
