Full Temp Folder: Not Enough Disk Space

A warning about insufficient space for temporary files does not necessarily mean that the Temp folder has filled the entire drive. First identify which category is actually using the space, then start cleaning up.

Full Temp Folder: Not Enough Disk Space

The short answer: A warning about insufficient space for temporary files does not prove that the Temp folder itself has filled the entire drive. Windows or an application was simply unable to create another working file. First save your work, close your programs, and open Settings → System → Storage. If temporary files have indeed grown, remove them using Windows tools and, if necessary, clean out the contents of your user %TEMP% folder. Do not manually delete WinSxS, System Volume Information, or unfamiliar parts of the Windows folder. If the freed space quickly fills up again, you need to identify the process creating the data.

What a temporary folder error actually means

Windows and individual programs need free space for working files. An installer may first unpack a package into a temporary folder and only then move the files to their destination. Updates, web browsers, graphics software, accounting software, and applications that open large archives work in a similar way.

The error may therefore appear even when the program being installed is considerably smaller than the remaining free space. During installation, the downloaded package, its unpacked contents, and part of the new installation may all be stored at the same time.

However, the message alone does not tell you:

  • which temporary folder is full;
  • which program used the space;
  • whether the entire drive or only the system partition is full;
  • whether the cause is insufficient capacity, an application error, or a storage failure.

Before deleting directories, save any documents you are working on and check Settings → System → Storage. The overview will show whether the space is being used by temporary files, applications, documents, synchronized data, or another category.

Windows has more than one Temp folder

The most important locations are the user and system temporary folders. They do not contain the same data or have the same permissions.

LocationWhat it usually containsSafe procedure
%TEMP%Working files belonging to the currently signed-in user and running applicationsSave your work, close programs, and delete only the folder’s contents
C:\Windows\TempTemporary data from the system, services, installers, and updatesPreferably use Settings or Disk Cleanup
Individual application cachesThumbnails, downloaded data, and working copies stored outside the standard Temp folderClear them through the application’s settings if it provides that option

To open the user folder, press Win + R, type %TEMP%, and press Enter. Using the variable is more reliable than entering the path manually because the location may be configured differently.

C:\Windows\Temp is not the same folder. Cleaning the user Temp folder does not mean that you have removed system temporary files—and vice versa.

What usually fills up Temp

An unusually large Temp folder is generally caused by a specific operation or program:

  • An incomplete installation. The installer unpacks files but fails to remove them after an error or interruption.
  • A Windows or application update. Some downloaded and prepared data may remain until a restart or after a failed installation.
  • Working copies of documents. Office and graphics applications create temporary data for continuous saving or recovery after a crash.
  • Extracting an archive. A file opened directly from an archive may first be fully extracted to a temporary location.
  • A malfunctioning application. A program may repeatedly create new logs, exports, or temporary copies without removing old files.

Working and recovery files are why you should not clean Temp while you still have unfinished work open. Save your documents and close regular programs first.

A safe step-by-step cleanup procedure

Check the available space after each step. Once you have recovered the capacity you need, there is no reason to continue deleting files.

1. Review the storage breakdown

Open Settings → System → Storage and allow Windows to finish calculating the categories.

If temporary files are small but the system drive is almost full, Temp is probably not the main cause. Check the size of installed applications, user files, and synchronized folders. Free space on drive D: will not help a program that needs to write to Temp on a full C: drive.

2. Use the Temporary files overview

Under Storage, open Temporary files and review the individual categories. Windows lists data that it can recognize and manage.

Do not automatically select everything. Pay particular attention to:

  • Downloads, which may contain documents, exports, and installation packages;
  • Recycle Bin, which may contain files you intend to restore;
  • installation or update files if you are currently dealing with an incomplete update.

If the drive ran out of space during an update, the cause may be an error other than the regular Temp folder. We describe the next steps in Windows Update won’t install.

3. Use Disk Cleanup

Search for Disk Cleanup in the Start menu, select the system drive, and review the categories offered. After you choose to clean up system files, the tool may display additional items.

Even here, you should not remove absolutely everything without checking it first. The advantage of this tool is that it works with categories recognized by the system, instead of requiring you to manually delete unfamiliar directories within Windows.

4. Clean out the user %TEMP% folder

Save your work, close regular applications, and follow these steps:

  1. Press Win + R.
  2. Type %TEMP% and confirm.
  3. Select the contents of the open folder.
  4. Delete the selected files.
  5. Skip any files reported as being in use.

Delete only the contents of the open Temp folder. Do not remove the folder itself or any of its parent directories. If a file cannot be deleted, do not change its permissions or forcibly terminate system processes because of it.

5. Restart and check the result

Restarting can complete pending changes and terminate processes that were keeping temporary files open. After Windows starts again, recheck the available space and the category breakdown under Storage.

The state immediately after cleanup is not the only thing that matters. Also watch whether the same category starts growing rapidly again.

What not to delete because of a full drive

A large folder is not necessarily unnecessary. Without a precise diagnosis, do not manually delete:

  • the WinSxS folder or any of its subfolders;
  • System Volume Information;
  • unfamiliar files and directories inside C:\Windows;
  • the hiberfil.sys file;
  • system recovery partitions;
  • the working directories of business software while it is running;
  • files for which you have merely taken ownership or changed permissions.

WinSxS is the system component store used for Windows updates and repairs, among other purposes. In addition, the size shown in File Explorer may not match the amount of space that can actually be freed. It is not an ordinary junk folder.

hiberfil.sys is associated with hibernation and power features. If you want to remove it, the corresponding features must be disabled through supported Windows settings. Manually deleting the system file is not the correct procedure.

Also avoid universal “cleaner” applications that simultaneously delete system files, application caches, and registry entries without clearly explaining what they are doing. Freeing temporary storage does not require such a broad intervention.

When the symptoms do not make the cause clear, start by measuring and diagnosing the problem—fault diagnostics in Brno—rather than replacing components blindly. A related service is SSD replacement and RAM upgrade.

When Temp is small but drive C: is full

The Storage overview will often reveal that the error originated elsewhere.

FindingWhat to investigate
Temporary files use little spaceInstalled applications, user data, virtual machines, or large archives
Drive D: has plenty of space, but C: is fullTemp, Windows, and user profiles usually continue writing to C:
OneDrive is using the spaceSynchronization status and files configured to remain permanently available on the device
The system category is growingUpdates, restore points, and system components managed by Windows
The storage device has a small fixed capacityThe option of moving data or replacing the storage device, depending on the computer’s design
The source of the used space cannot be identified easilyFolder-by-folder analysis and checking which processes are writing to the drive

With OneDrive, first confirm that synchronization completed without errors. The Free up space option keeps the file in the cloud and removes the local copy. The file may then be unavailable without an internet connection. Synchronization itself is also not a complete backup; we explain the difference in Why OneDrive is not a backup.

Why the drive fills up again after cleanup

If the recovered space quickly disappears, repeatedly deleting Temp files only addresses the symptom. Possible causes include:

  • an installer that repeatedly fails;
  • an update that keeps downloading or unpacking itself again;
  • a program creating a continuously growing log;
  • a synchronization client downloading data again;
  • an export or backup being written to the system drive;
  • an application that fails to remove working copies after crashing.

Make a note of the available space and the category that is growing. At the same time, you can use Task Manager to check whether a process is continuously writing to the drive. If storage usage remains high and Windows slows down, continue with Disk usage at 100% and Windows running slowly.

Automatic cleanup can help with routine temporary files, but it will not fix a faulty update, a malfunctioning program, or an endlessly growing log.

When to suspect an SSD or hard drive fault

A lack of free space is not the same as a storage failure. However, pay attention if a full drive is accompanied by:

  • repeated errors when reading or saving files;
  • the system freezing while working with data;
  • files that no longer open;
  • the storage device disconnecting unexpectedly;
  • SMART diagnostic warnings.

In this situation, back up irreplaceable data first. Further extensive deletion, updates, and write-intensive tests may place unnecessary strain on a storage device whose condition is still unknown.

SMART is not the only basis for making a decision, but it can highlight problems that cleanup alone will not resolve. We explain the meaning of individual warnings in How to read drive SMART data.

When professional diagnostics in Brno make sense

Diagnostics are appropriate when the drive fills up again after cleanup, you cannot identify the growing folder, Windows will not start because of insufficient space, or storage errors appear.

A repair technician can distinguish between:

  • a problem with a specific application or update;
  • an improperly partitioned or undersized system partition;
  • space consumed by user or synchronized data;
  • Windows corruption;
  • an SSD, eMMC, or hard drive fault.

If you are not comfortable performing the work yourself, we provide diagnostics for full drives and Windows repairs in Brno. If the system can no longer be started normally, the diagnostic results may also lead to a Windows 11 repair or reinstallation. The exact procedure can only be determined after assessing the condition of the system, the storage device, and your data backup.

A quick decision based on your findings

  • Temporary files are large: use Settings, Disk Cleanup, and, if necessary, clean out the contents of %TEMP%.
  • Temp is small, but C: is full: look for large applications, user data, and cloud files stored locally.
  • Some files cannot be deleted: skip them and check again after restarting.
  • Free space quickly disappears again: determine which category and process are growing.
  • The computer freezes or reports drive errors: back up your data first, then continue with diagnostics.
