KB5124010: Game and Application Crashes

The short answer: In early October 2026, Microsoft confirmed that update KB5124010 could crash some games, media players, and business applications using the system AC-3 decoder. The fix is included in KB5127648, released on October 13, and in newer Windows updates. Update the system first, restart the computer, and repeat the same action. Do not replace your sound card or change drivers based on this symptom alone.

What exactly did KB5124010 cause?

KB5124010 was an optional non-security preview update for Windows 11 released on September 22, 2026. The defect did not affect audio output alone. Applications using AC-3 decoding, also known as Dolby Digital, could close at launch, during use, or when a particular audio feature was enabled.

For example, a media player might work until it opened a particular file, while a game might run until it began playing music. This did not automatically mean the speakers or sound card were faulty. Microsoft linked the problem to a Windows audio-decoding component, not to the audio device.

Microsoft has listed the issue as resolved on the Windows Release Health page since October 13, 2026. The fix is included in KB5127648, released on October 13, 2026, and in all newer Windows updates.

When to stop troubleshooting blindly and what we can do

Updating the system yourself is a reasonable first step. Stop making further changes, however, if:

  • the application still crashes after installing the fix and restarting;
  • other programs also freeze, the computer restarts, or a blue screen appears;
  • this is a managed business computer where updates, encryption, or drivers are controlled by an administrator.

Randomly uninstalling drivers, using cleanup utilities, or reinstalling Windows can alter other parts of the system and remove evidence needed to identify the cause. On a business device, do not bypass established update policies either.

If you want to determine whether the problem comes from the application or the hardware, you can book computer diagnostics after a Windows update. We will first verify the system version and installed updates, then compare the crash with the logs, and finally explain the identified cause and recommended next steps before carrying out any repair.

Timeline of the confirmed issue

DateWhat happened
September 22, 2026Microsoft released the optional KB5124010 update
Early October 2026Microsoft confirmed crashes in applications using the system AC-3 decoder
October 5, 2026TechRadar reported the impact on games and other programs; no fix was available yet
October 13, 2026Microsoft released update KB5127648 with the fix and marked the Windows Release Health entry as resolved

The TechRadar report from October 5 was published before the fix became available. Its recommendation at the time to remove KB5124010 is therefore no longer the appropriate first step. As of October 18, installing KB5127648 or a newer cumulative update should take priority.

Which computers and programs were affected?

Microsoft lists Windows 11 versions 24H2, 25H2, and 26H2. A game, media player, or business application could be affected if it relied on the affected AC-3 decoder built into Windows. According to Microsoft, the defect primarily affected older applications. Many modern programs use their own audio decoders and were therefore unaffected.

Microsoft did not publish a complete list of affected programs. The presence of KB5124010 alone therefore does not prove that the update caused every crash. Three connections are important:

  1. KB5124010 is actually installed.
  2. The problems began after it was installed.
  3. The crash occurs during an action that may involve AC-3 audio.

If all audio in Windows has stopped working or the device has disappeared from Device Manager, follow the guide No sound in Windows 11. That is a different symptom from a particular application unexpectedly closing.

How to check for and install the fix

Open Settings → Windows Update → Update history and follow these steps:

  1. Find KB5124010 and note its installation date.
  2. Check whether KB5127648 dated October 13, 2026, or a newer cumulative update is listed.
  3. If the fix is missing, return to Windows Update and select Check for updates.
  4. Install the available cumulative update.
  5. Restart the entire computer. Simply closing and reopening the program is not enough.
  6. Repeat the exact action that previously caused the application to crash.

If the update will not install, do not try to resolve the issue by repeatedly removing other packages. Follow the instructions for when Windows Update reports an error.

How to distinguish this issue from another fault

SymptomWhat to check first
The program began crashing after KB5124010 and the fix is missingWindows Update
The crash occurs when opening media or enabling an audio featureWhether the action involves system AC-3 decoding
Audio does not work anywhere in the systemOutput device, driver, and audio settings
The audio device has disappeared from Device ManagerDriver, USB connection, or hardware
The computer freezes or restarts outside the affected program as wellSystem stability, drivers, RAM, and storage
The same crash continues after the fix and a restartApplication logs and other software-related causes

KB5124010 does not explain every audio problem or every game crash. If the entire computer shuts down, restarts, or suffers a significant loss of performance while gaming, the guide for when your computer shuts down while gaming and FPS drops will be more relevant.

What to record if the fix did not help

Type winver into the Start menu and note the displayed Windows version. Then run perfmon /rel to open Reliability Monitor. Find the entry matching the time of the crash and record:

  • the application’s name and version;
  • the exact time of the crash;
  • the action immediately preceding it;
  • whether audio was playing or a particular media file was being opened;
  • whether the problem affects other programs;
  • which updates were installed before the test.

Do not delete the logs yet or reinstall the application without a clear reason. If the problem no longer occurs after installing KB5127648, there is no need to change the driver or interfere with the hardware.
