How Much Does Laptop Repair Cost?

The final repair cost depends on the actual fault, the laptop’s design, the work required and the price of a compatible part. A symptom alone is not enough.

How Much Does Laptop Repair Cost?

The short answer: There is no single fixed price for laptop repair. The final amount consists of diagnostics, labour and any replacement parts required. An accurate quote can only be prepared once the laptop’s full model designation and the cause of the fault are known. “It won’t charge” could indicate a faulty cable, battery, connector or motherboard power circuit—and each repair involves a different amount of work.

What makes up the repair cost

Cost componentWhat it includesWhat affects it
DiagnosticsVerifying the symptom, taking measurements, testing components and identifying the causeType of fault, whether disassembly is required and the extent of testing
LabourDisassembly, repair or replacement, reassembly and final testingThe laptop’s design and accessibility of the faulty component
Replacement partDisplay, battery, keyboard, fan, SSD, connector or chassis componentExact model, specifications, availability and part design
Additional workData backup or transfer, system installation or device configurationStorage condition and the requested scope of service

With a simple replacement, the new part may account for most of the total cost. In other cases, the component itself is inexpensive, but the laptop must be almost completely disassembled. A keyboard is a typical example: on one model it can be removed separately, while on another it is fixed to the top case and the repair requires removing the motherboard, battery and other components.

Prices marked “from” in a price list therefore represent a starting rate, not a binding price for every repair. The quote must be based on the specific device.

Why the symptom alone is not enough

The statement “the laptop won’t charge” does not identify a single fault. Diagnostics must distinguish between causes such as:

  • a faulty power adapter or USB-C cable;
  • a mechanically damaged connector;
  • a worn or faulty battery;
  • a separate power input board;
  • damage to the charging circuit on the motherboard.

Likewise, a black screen does not necessarily mean that the LCD panel is faulty. The cause could be the cable routed around the hinge, RAM, firmware, the graphics output or the motherboard. An image on an external monitor helps narrow down the possibilities, but does not by itself identify the part that needs to be ordered.

We explain the difference between replacing a cabled module and soldering in more detail in Laptop power connector repair.

The exact model determines both the part and the work

“Lenovo ThinkPad”, “Dell Latitude” or “HP laptop” is not specific enough for a repair quote. The repair centre needs an identifier for the exact variant:

  • for Lenovo, the full model and MTM;
  • for Dell, the model and Service Tag;
  • for HP, the Product Number;
  • for ASUS and Acer, the full model code;
  • for MacBook, the A-number and device generation.

Laptops from the same product line may use different batteries, keyboards, displays and mounting methods across generations. Two 15.6-inch panels are not necessarily interchangeable either. They may differ in resolution, refresh rate, connector, connector position, touch layer or mounting points.

The MacBook Air A2337 with an M1 chip and the A2681 with an M2 chip differ in both their design and compatible assemblies. Their storage is not a conventional removable M.2 module, so data recovery and motherboard repair must be assessed differently from a laptop with a replaceable SSD. We repair Apple devices as an independent repair provider, not as an Apple Authorised Service Provider.

What diagnostics must distinguish

SymptomPossible causesWhat affects the price mostWhat to do before handing it over
The laptop will not turn onAdapter, connector, battery, firmware or a motherboard power railModule replacement versus motherboard repairBring the adapter you normally use
It turns on but shows no imagePanel, cable, RAM, firmware or motherboardDisplay type and location of the faultNote whether an external monitor works

It is slow or freezesSSD condition, insufficient RAM, temperatures, the operating system or a background processSoftware repair versus hardware replacementBack up any accessible important data
It is noisy and overheatsDust, fan, heatpipe, thermal paste, thermal pads or high system loadComplexity of disassembly and condition of the cooling systemIf it shuts down under load, stop placing it under further load
The display is cracked or flickersPanel, cable, hinges, lid or connectorPanel specifications and damage to surrounding componentsAvoid moving the lid unnecessarily
The keyboard does not workKeyboard, ribbon cable, controller or liquid damageA separate component versus the entire palmrestSwitch the device off after a liquid spill
The hinges crack or breakHinge, threaded mounts, lid, palmrest or display cableNumber of damaged chassis componentsDo not force the lid open
Windows will not startOperating system, SSD, encryption, updates or firmwareDrive condition and the need to preserve dataHave the available BitLocker recovery key ready

This table is not a price list. It shows why the repair centre must first identify the cause and only then price the work and the correct part.

With a cracked panel, it helps to determine in advance whether only the display is damaged or whether the lid or hinges are affected as well. You can find more details in Cracked or flickering laptop display.

What a post-diagnostic quote should include

After the inspection, you should receive a clear proposal explaining:

  • what fault was identified;
  • what repair method is recommended;
  • which part will be used;
  • how much the labour, part and diagnostics cost;
  • the price limit being approved;
  • whether the repair could affect your data;
  • whether the stated price includes VAT;
  • what will be tested after the repair.

At Servis PC Brno, we only begin repairs after the quote has been approved in writing. If further damage is discovered after disassembly, the original approval should not automatically be treated as permission to exceed the approved scope. A revised proposal must be sent first.

If you decline the quote, the device will be returned unrepaired and the pre-agreed diagnostic fee will be charged according to the actual extent of the work performed.

If the fault remains after this inspection or the device has mechanical damage, it can be handled by our laptop repair service in Brno. A related option is our MacBook repair service in Brno.

When a repair makes sense

A repair is generally worth considering if the laptop still meets your performance needs, its other components are in good condition and the faulty part can be replaced separately. For a work computer, do not compare the quote solely with the device’s second-hand value.

The cost of a replacement also includes:

  • transferring data and user profiles;
  • installing work applications;
  • restoring licences;
  • configuring VPN access, printers and a docking station;
  • checking accessory compatibility;
  • time spent without a ready-to-use working environment.

More careful consideration is needed after extensive liquid damage, when both the chassis and display are broken, or when a laptop that no longer meets performance or operating-system requirements has a motherboard fault. If a repair is not cost-effective, you can compare the replacement cost with the range of refurbished laptops at XJO.cz (an online shop operated by this repair provider and currently in trial operation).

After a liquid spill, do not switch the laptop on merely to see whether it still works. The article Liquid spilled on a laptop: what to do immediately explains the safe first steps.

What to provide for a more accurate quote

Include the following in your enquiry:

  1. the manufacturer, exact model and identifier from the label;
  2. what the laptop does and what is not working;
  3. when the problem appeared;
  4. whether the device was dropped, exposed to liquid or overheated;
  5. whether the problem began after an update or previous repair;
  6. whether important data has been backed up;
  7. which accessories you are handing over.

Attach a clear photograph of the label, any visible damage and any error message. A short video is helpful if indicator lights are flashing or the problem occurs intermittently.

If you want the fault diagnosed and repaired in Brno, prepare the device using the overview Laptop repair today: what to tell us in advance. The more precise the information you provide, the easier it is to check the required part in advance and determine what needs to be tested.

How to recognise a fair repair quote

A good quote is more than the name of a component and a total amount. It should make clear why the part needs to be replaced and whether diagnostics have ruled out other likely causes.

Before approving it, check:

  • whether the quote matches the exact model;
  • whether it separates diagnostics, labour and parts;
  • whether it addresses the preservation of important data;
  • whether it describes post-repair testing;
  • whether it specifies the receipt and warranty terms;
  • whether it includes any irreversible work without your consent.

“We’ll replace the battery because the laptop does not last very long” is not a sufficient proposal if nobody has checked the battery, adapter and charging system. Similarly, simply tightening a hinge may not resolve a cracking case if the hinge mounts have already broken away. An accurate price begins with an accurate diagnosis, not an estimate based on a single sentence.
