The short answer: Note which application was running, which devices were connected, and when the restart occurred. If the Mac is stable, update macOS and your applications, disconnect any unnecessary peripherals, and check whether the problem returns during normal use. Also try the adapter intended for your model—an underpowered power source can behave like a fault under load. Do not repeatedly reproduce the problem with benchmarks if the device becomes extremely hot, gives off an unusual smell, or has suffered liquid damage.
A restart is not a diagnosis
A message saying that your Mac restarted because of a problem may point to either software or hardware. A sudden shutdown without a message is a different symptom, as is a restart that occurs only with a particular dock, drive, or monitor. Without context, the symptom alone cannot identify the battery, logic board, or cooling system as the cause.
| What happens | What it typically points to | What it does not prove on its own |
|---|---|---|
| A message says the Mac restarted because of a problem, then the system starts | a driver, system component, peripheral, or hardware | that the logic board is faulty |
| The Mac shuts down without a message, as if the power had been disconnected | the power supply, battery, temperature, or hardware | that the battery is faulty |
| The Mac restarts only with a particular dock, drive, or monitor | the accessory, cable, or power supply for the setup | that the MacBook’s port is faulty |
| The Mac freezes without restarting and the pointer stops moving | an application, the system, or storage | that the memory is faulty |
This is precisely why the first step involves taking notes, not reaching for a screwdriver. Unless you distinguish between these four scenarios, you will be testing blindly.
What to record safely
Note the time, the task that was running, the power status, and the list of connected peripherals. Take a photo of any message, but do not share the serial number or other identifiers publicly. It is also useful to determine whether the issue occurs only on battery power, only with the adapter connected, or in both situations, and whether it was preceded by an update, a fall, liquid exposure, or the addition of a new accessory.
If the Mac remains stable when it is not under load, create an up-to-date backup. A hardware repair does not in itself guarantee that your data will be preserved, and data recovery is not included in this service.
Model and chip: why the same symptom requires a different approach
Find the exact model, year, and chip type—using the Apple menu → About This Mac, or, for more detail, by holding the Option key and selecting System Information. If the Mac is switched off, check the model number beginning with the letter A on the bottom cover. Apple’s “Identify your MacBook Pro model” and “Identify your MacBook Air model” pages can help you determine its generation (see the sources).
The procedure genuinely differs between these model families:
- Intel-based MacBook Air models (up to 2020) and MacBook Air with an Apple chip—M1 (2020), M2 (2022 and 2023), and M3 (2024).
- 13” and 15” MacBook Pro with Touch Bar (2016–2019) and the 16” Intel model (2019).
- 13” MacBook Pro with the M1 (2020) or M2 (2022) chip.
- 14” and 16” MacBook Pro models (2021 and later) with Pro- and Max-series chips.
On Intel models, resetting the SMC can help with power and startup issues. There is no SMC reset on models with an Apple chip (M1 and later)—its role is handled by shutting the Mac down completely, leaving it without power for a moment, and then switching it back on. The procedures for entering safe mode and starting Apple Diagnostics also differ, which is why a universal “MacBook restart key combination” found online often applies to a different machine.
Power supply: the most commonly overlooked clue
A restart or shutdown under load may not be caused by a fault in the computer but by a mismatch between its power consumption and the power source. Apple specifies an appropriate power adapter for each Mac, and the differences between product lines are substantial: the adapter supplied with a MacBook Air is significantly less powerful than the one intended for a 16” MacBook Pro. If a more powerful machine is connected to an incompatible, lower-wattage power source during an export, compilation, or game, the battery level may continue to fall despite the cable being connected, eventually causing the Mac to shut down.
Try the adapter and cable intended for your model, a different wall socket, and a direct connection to the MacBook without a dock. Do not continue using a damaged, hot, or loose connector. The power supply path is covered in more detail in MacBook Not Charging; battery status and health are discussed in the article about MacBook battery replacement.
Software and peripherals
Apple recommends installing available updates and trying safe mode if the Mac starts reliably. Disconnect all peripherals and reconnect them one at a time, leaving enough time between each one to identify which device causes the issue to return. Pay particular attention to docks, hubs, bus-powered external drives, and older third-party tools that make low-level changes to the system.
The purpose of this process is to identify a pattern, not to subject the device to prolonged stress. Stop testing if the power supply is unstable or a cable is damaged. Temperature is only one hypothesis, not the default diagnosis—and it is certainly not a reason to install dubious “cleaners” or utilities that override system management.
When to stop testing
Stop if you notice an unusual smell, liquid, crackling, deformation of the enclosure, a lifting trackpad, or unusual heat concentrated in one area. Do the same if the Mac restarts increasingly often, fails to complete startup, or behaves worse after every attempt. Disassembling it at home and replacing components blindly will make diagnosis more difficult and, with bonded assemblies, introduce the risk of further damage.
Apple Diagnostics: what it can and cannot do
Apple Diagnostics can detect some hardware problems and display a reference code, which you should photograph or write down. However, it cannot definitively declare a particular component faulty, and a negative result does not rule out a fault—especially one that appears only after prolonged use under load. It is one source of diagnostic information, not a price list of defective components.
What to bring and what a proper quote should include
Bring the MacBook, the adapter and cable you normally use, the exact model and year, the macOS version, a timeline of the issue, a photograph of any message, and the reference code if you have one. If the restart is associated with a particular dock, drive, or monitor, bring that as well—otherwise, the connection cannot be verified. Do not send your Apple Account password through a form or by email.
A reliable quote can only be prepared after inspection and should include a description of the findings, the exact model, the proposed work, the type and origin of any replacement component, the scope of the repair, the post-repair testing method, and the repair warranty. The price should be approved in advance, not when you collect the device. For an intermittent fault, the quote should also explain how we will verify that the symptom has not returned—a single successful startup is not sufficient proof.
What the repair shop will check
Out-of-warranty diagnostics compare the Mac’s behaviour without peripherals, with the correct power supply, and during a controlled repetition of the scenario in which the problem occurs. This is supplemented with diagnostic data appropriate to the exact model. We are an independent repair shop, not an Apple Authorised Service Provider. If the device is under warranty or covered by a manufacturer programme, contact the retailer or Apple before proceeding. We will confirm the price and scope of work only after inspecting the device.
